Consecration of our 9th Bishop will be September 28, 2013

The Rev. Whayne Hougland, Jr., will be consecrated as the 9th Bishop of the Diocese of Western Michigan, (pending the approval by a majority of Standing Committees and Diocesan Bishops of The Episcopal Church), on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 1:00 pm.  The Consecration will take place at Calvin College’s Van Noord Arena, 3201 Burton St., Grand Rapids. [Link to campus map at http://www.calvin.edu/map/campusmap.pdf ].  A reception will follow.

The Presiding Bishop and Prelate of the Episcopal Church, Katharine Jefferts Schori, will be the chief consecrator, and we look forward to welcoming her for her very first visit to Western Michigan.  The Rt. Rev. Michael Curry, Bishop of North Carolina, will preach.

Please plan to attend this joy-filled event.  If you have already made other plans for that day, cancel them and come to the Consecration instead! We hope to see many representatives there from every parish in the diocese to help welcome our newest bishop.  The arena has plenty of seating and the Transition Team has reserved blocks of rooms in three area hotels so there will be ample space for all who wish to attend what will surely be a wonderful liturgy and celebration.  Parking at the arena is limited, so arrive early.  Better yet – follow the lead of several parishes and charter a bus!

Discussion

  1. The Rev. Pamela J. Breakey says:

I hope there will be enough designated handicapped parking. There was not enough at the election and the entrance with an elevator there was not at all obvious from the parking lot. Please consider having parking lot attendants and reserving more parking places than already marked for those of us who need to park close to the building.

Calvin College has designated handicapped parking places immediately in front of the entrance to the arena, though it is still a bit of a walk to get into the building. We will have an usher directing people to the elevator, or you could sit in the upper seating (nice cushy chairs with arms!) which is on the entrance level.

Here is what is on Calvin’s site:

Handicapped Parking: A limited number of handicapped parking spaces are available in the cul-de-sac on the south side of the complex. People transporting persons with limited mobility are permitted to drop off their passengers and park in the west parking lot. There are also a number of handicapped parking spaces west of the engineering building.

Campus Map: The campus map is at the link shown below. The handicapped parking by the entrance is at the circle on the left side of the map, about halfway down. It is right in front of the Venema Aquatic Center. The wide gray area going up from that parking is the entrance to the building. Hope that helps. No real opportunity for closer parking, since this is in the middle of a college campus. Campus Map Link: http://www.calvin.edu/map/sfc/

  2. Ann Hackett says:

When the time draws near, please offer direction for a bus driver dropping off passengers and designate where the bus should park.
